Buckley's Run Gaye Johnstone’s Buckley’s Run vineyard has 7.5 acres of pinot gris under vine at Stony Creek Rd, Red Hill. She has been selling grapes to T’Gallant since 2001, along with establishing her own label. The name Buckley’s Run came from a Great Dane of Gaye’s, in turn drawn from the fact that Gaye grew up at William Buckley’s Sorrento launching place. Her parents' place was at the camp site of what was Collins Settlement. “My grandfather came to Sorrento in the 1920s: one of a handful living there at the time, his telephone number was ‘Sorrento 4’. Red Hill is now very much home for Gaye, and 18 month-old Great Dane Shilo is doing the running these days. “I’d had the property a couple of years by the time the first harvest of 30 tonnes came up - Kevin MCarthy made some of my first vintage and David Lloyd at Eldridge also. The rest of the grapes I sold to T’Gallant." By contrast, Buckleys Run saw a very small vintage in 2002 with just five tonnes of grapes. But the smaller yield produced some very intense, exciting pinot gris. Gaye’s vines share the Stony Creek property with her first love: Arabian horses, which she has been breeding for many years. |
