Perry Lane
What
Greg Ray began making wine in vintage 2000 after having studied at CSU, Bachelor of Applied Science, Wine Science.
He’s been in the wine industry since 1989, managing vineyards, wineries and properties, working with a vineyard maintenance company and also as an assistant winemaker. Greg has had some very good results at both local and international wine shows (contract wine making).
The Rays decided in vintage 2006 to produce wine under their own label.
Where
At an old apple cool store in Barker’s Road, Main Ridge. The Rays own all their equipment, including a 20 year-old German membrane wine press. They do all their own bottling and packaging as well as that of their clients.
How
Contract wine making utilises client’s fruit. For Perry Lane, the Rays purchase fruit from a vineyard Greg was involved in planting in 1994.
“We use selected yeast strains for various batches and for particular outcomes and change our winemaking technique to achieve individual results,” said Greg.
“We allow our wines to develop naturally with minimal intervention but with maximum attention to detail. “
Perry Lane is a family operated business where all members have a role and all members have fun doing their jobs.
They started selling wine at Red Hill Market late last year.
Why
“We take a great deal of pride in knowing that other people like our wine. We are trying to create a brand and achieve significant local brand recognition. We are building a business that will allow us to spend more time together as a family without having to occupy our entire life working.”
The Perry Lane label also offers “the chance to experiment with traditional grape varieties to make contemporary wines to suit a wide range of food styles”.
“Developing own wine label gives the wine maker the opportunity to create wine for a specific market. It’s also an opportunity to take a leap of faith to create a product and take it right through the creative and selling stages.”
