Point Leo Road

The Point Leo Road Vineyard was established in the spring of 1996, and is family owned and operated. Located on the southern slopes of the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria, it overlooks Westernport Bay to Seal Rocks and The Nobbies.

A true cool climate site with maritime influences from both Western Port and Port Phillip.

Point Leo Road Vineyard was originally developed as a pinot noir and chardonnay block; varieties that the Mornington Peninsula grows exceptionally well, but over the past 3 to 4 years other varieties have begun to be planted to add diversity to what should become an interesting range of premium wines.

The first wines to be released under the Point Leo Road label were Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. A Pinot Noir Rose was released at the end of September 2005. A sparkling Pinot Noir Chardonnay was released just prior to Christmas, 2005.

All Point Leo Road Vineyard wines are made from single vineyard grapes grown at Point Leo Road Vineyard. They are therefore site specific, allowing the character of the rich red soils and the vineyard’s unique microclimate to be reflected in the individuality of the wine.

Our winemakers take a minimalist intervention approach which means that the quality fruit becomes quality wine.

The long and extended autumn ripening of the luscious fruit during the 2004 season has meant an intensity of flavours resulting in excellent wine. It is important to remember that boutique wines will always reflect the seasons; be they wet and miserable or mellow and warm. This is what makes boutique wines so interesting - it could never be claimed nor should it be expected that the next season will be the same as the one before!

Our range of wines are produced at Merricks North on the Mornington Peninsula at a winery specializing in small batch boutique winemaking. This has the advantage of both grape grower and winemaker determining the style wine to be made without a “one size fits all” mentality – a criticism often levelled at larger producers.

Point Leo Road vineyard is only 16.5 acres when fully planted; the earliest plantings were of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. More recently 2.5 acres of Pinot Gris and 1.5 acres of Lagrein were planted, and in the spring of 2006 areas of Sauvignon Blanc and Gewurztraminer will be added.

Our firm belief is that the making of quality fine wine begins in the vineyard. The trellising system use to support the vines is Scott Henry. Fruit is cropped at 3-4 tonnes per acre. Great care is taken to maintain the vines using best viticultural practice. Canopy management is crucial to the production of beautiful fruit. Shoot thinning, leaf plucking and trimming control foliage and allow maximum light and air through the foliage to keep fruit disease free. Our vines are hand pruned; which allows the vines to keep in balance, and the amount of fruit that each vine carries is controlled. Too much often means poor ripening which translates into bad wine!
Soil nutrition is carefully monitored as vine health is paramount.

Ecological and environment consideration are equally important and a well regulated, low impact spray program has been in effect since the commencement of vineyard operations.

All fruit is hand picked at its peak and transported immediately to the winery where the journey from grape to bottle begins.
